  20. PNG is supposed to become a new standard for pictures
  21. on the Web, it also has several advantages over the GIF
  22. format.
  23.

  25. GIF features retained in PNG include:
  26.  
  27. - Indexed-color images of up to 256 colors.
  28. - Streamability: files can be read and written
  29.   serially, thus allowing the file format to be used as a communications
  30.   protocol for on-the-fly generation and display of images.
  31. - Progressive display: a suitably prepared image file can be
  32.   displayed as it is received over a communications link,
  33.   yielding a low-resolution image very quickly
  34.   followed by gradual improvement of detail.
  35. - Transparency: portions of the image can be marked as transparent,
  36.   creating the effect of a non-rectangular image.
  37. - Ancillary information: textual comments and other data can be
  38.   stored within the image file.
  39. - Complete hardware and platform independence.
  40. - Effective, 100% lossless compression.

  42. Important new features of PNG, not available in GIF, include:
  43.  
  44. - Truecolor images of up to 48 bits per pixel.
  45. - Grayscale images of up to 16 bits per pixel.
  46. - Full alpha channel (general transparency masks).
  47. - Image gamma information, which supports automatic display of images
  48.   with correct brightness/contrast regardless of the machines used to
  49.   originate and display the image.
  50. - Reliable, straightforward detection of file corruption.
  51. - Faster initial presentation in progressive display mode.

  53. PNG is designed to be:
  54.  
  55. - Simple and portable: developers should be able to implement PNG
  56.   easily.
  57. - Legally unencumbered: to the best knowledge of the PNG
  58.   authors, no algorithms under legal challenge are used.  (Some
  59.   considerable effort has been spent to verify this.)
  60. - Well compressed: both indexed-color and truecolor images are
  61.   compressed as effectively as in any other widely used lossless format,
  62.   and in most cases more effectively.
  63. - Interchangeable: any standard-conforming PNG decoder must read
  64.   all conforming PNG files.
  65. - Flexible: the format allows for future extensions and
  66.   private add-ons, without compromising interchangeability of basic PNG.
  67. - Robust: the design supports full file integrity checking as well
  68.   as simple, quick detection of common transmission errors.
